Our Story
Built on a Simple Idea
Seattle Boxes started with a question that would not go away: why are we destroying millions of boxes that still work perfectly fine? The answer was that nobody had built the infrastructure to give them a second life — so we did.
Where It Started
The Problem No One Was Solving
Walk behind any warehouse, distribution center, or big-box retailer and you will find the same scene: stacks of corrugated boxes — many used only once — crushed, baled, and hauled off to recycling plants or, worse, straight to landfills. The scale is staggering. The United States generates over 30 million tons of corrugated cardboard waste annually, and while recycling rates are better than other materials, recycling itself consumes enormous energy and water.
Our founders spent years in logistics and supply chain management. They watched this cycle repeat every single day. Perfectly sturdy double-wall gaylord boxes, used once to ship auto parts, getting flattened and tossed. Brand-new-looking RSC boxes that carried electronics across the country, trashed after a single trip. It was not just wasteful — it was expensive for everyone involved. Businesses paid to buy new boxes, then paid again to dispose of the old ones.
The gap in the market was obvious: there was no reliable, quality-controlled bridge between businesses with surplus boxes and businesses that needed them. No one was inspecting, grading, and redistributing used boxes at scale. So in the backyard of the logistics world — amid the shipping lanes of the Pacific Northwest — Seattle Boxes was born.
The founding team pooled their combined decades of logistics experience, secured a facility in Kent, WA — strategically positioned near the Port of Seattle, major interstate highways, and the densest concentration of distribution centers in the region — and started building something that had never existed: a professional, quality-controlled marketplace for used corrugated boxes.
The Early Days
Starting from Scratch
The first months were about proving the concept. Our team drove to warehouses and factories, offered to haul away their used boxes for free (something they were already paying waste haulers to do), brought them back to our space, inspected every single one, and started building inventory. Word spread quickly. Once businesses realized they could get quality boxes at half the cost of new, demand outpaced supply almost overnight.
The real breakthrough came when we formalized our grading system. Instead of selling used boxes as an undifferentiated commodity, we created clear quality tiers. Customers knew exactly what they were getting — no surprises, no guessing. That transparency built trust, and trust built repeat business.
We also learned early that the sell side of the equation was just as important as the buy side. Businesses did not just want to buy cheap boxes — they wanted to sell their surplus, too. When we started paying for used boxes, we unlocked a supply chain that fed itself: one company's outbound shipment became another company's inbound packaging.
Those early days were scrappy. Long hours, small margins, and a lot of manual labor sorting boxes by size, grade, and type. But every load we processed proved the model worked. Every satisfied customer validated the vision. And every truck that came back full instead of empty told us we were building something with real staying power.
The Innovation
Building Trust Through Grading
Our three-tier grading system transformed used boxes from an unpredictable commodity into a reliable product. Here is what each grade means and why it matters.
Prime Grade
Like-new appearance with full structural integrity. Minimal or no printing, no visible wear, no tape residue. These boxes look and perform as if they just came off the manufacturing line.
Best for: Customer-facing shipments, retail packaging, branded unboxing experiences, and any application where appearance matters.
Standard Grade
Light cosmetic wear — may have some printing, minor scuffs, or tape marks — but fully functional with complete structural integrity. Flaps, seams, and walls are all in excellent condition.
Best for: B2B shipments, warehousing, internal transfers, and any application where function matters more than appearance.
Economy Grade
Visible cosmetic wear including printing, labels, and minor dents — but structurally sound. These boxes will protect your products reliably at the lowest possible cost.
Best for: Storage, moving, non-customer-facing shipments, and situations where maximum cost savings are the priority.
Milestones
Key Moments in Our Journey
From a single truckload to hundreds of thousands of boxes processed annually, here are the milestones that shaped Seattle Boxes.
Foundation
Company Founded
Seattle Boxes launches with a clear mission: create a marketplace for quality-graded used corrugated boxes. First facility secured in Kent, WA, within reach of the region's massive port and distribution corridors. Initial inventory built from local warehouse surplus.
First Milestone
10,000 Boxes Processed
Reached the first five-figure mark within months of opening. Proved that demand for quality-graded used boxes was real and sustainable. Built initial relationships with warehouses and distribution centers that would become long-term suppliers.
System Design
Three-Tier Grading System Launched
Formalized our quality grading system into three clear tiers: Prime (like-new appearance and full structural integrity), Standard (light cosmetic wear, fully functional), and Economy (visible wear, structurally sound). This transparency became the backbone of customer trust.
Growth
100,000 Boxes Processed
Passed the six-figure milestone for boxes inspected and redistributed. Hired additional warehouse staff and expanded inspection capacity. Began receiving repeat orders from e-commerce businesses and fulfillment centers.
Expansion
Gaylord Box Program Launched
Responded to massive demand from manufacturers and fulfillment centers by building out a dedicated gaylord box division. Heavy-duty pallet-sized bulk containers became one of our top-selling categories. Regular, full-bottom, and octagonal styles added to inventory.
Supply Chain
Box Buying Program Scaled
Expanded our purchasing program to actively buy used boxes from businesses across the greater Seattle metro area. This created a self-feeding supply chain where one company's outbound surplus became another's inbound packaging. Transformed waste disposal costs into revenue for our suppliers.
Logistics
Transportation Fleet Established
Added our own pickup and delivery fleet to streamline the experience. Businesses could now schedule regular box collection or delivery without coordinating third-party freight. Optimized routes to minimize fuel consumption and maximize pickup density.
Services
Reprocessing Division Opens
Launched box repair, refurbishment, and modification services. Boxes that previously would have gone straight to recycling could now be resized, patched, or re-scored to meet exact customer specifications. Increased our reuse rate from 65% to 78%.
Recycling
Zero-Waste Corrugated Processing Achieved
Reached 100% landfill diversion for all corrugated materials processed through our facility. Every box either gets reused (78%) or properly recycled (22%). Began tracking and reporting environmental metrics using EPA lifecycle analysis data.
Scale
500,000+ Boxes Annually
Scaled operations to process over half a million boxes per year, serving more than 2,000 businesses. Achieved estimated annual diversion of 850+ tons of corrugated from landfills. Preserving approximately 3,400 trees and saving 7 million gallons of water annually.
Innovation
Electric Fleet Transition Begins
Started converting local delivery routes to electric vehicles. Currently at 35% conversion with a target of 100% by 2028. Paired with route optimization software to further reduce energy consumption and emissions per delivery.
Future
1 Million Box Target Set
Announced our goal to double processing capacity to one million boxes annually. Investing in expanded facility space, additional inspection stations, regional collection partnerships, and technology upgrades to hit the seven-figure mark.
Hard-Won Wisdom
Lessons Learned
Building a company in a space that did not previously exist comes with a steep learning curve. Here are the insights that shaped how we operate today.
Trust Is Built on Transparency
Early on, we learned that customers needed to know exactly what they were getting. Our three-tier grading system was born from this insight. When customers can trust the grade, they can buy with confidence — and they come back.
Supply and Demand Are Two Sides of the Same Coin
We could not just focus on selling boxes. We had to build the buying side simultaneously. Once we started paying for surplus boxes, we unlocked a supply chain that fed itself naturally. The sell side fuels the buy side and vice versa.
Logistics Is the Real Product
Customers do not just want boxes — they want the entire logistics problem solved. When we added our own fleet, satisfaction scores jumped. Pickup, delivery, and on-time reliability matter as much as the boxes themselves.
Sustainability Sells When You Make It Easy
Businesses want to be more sustainable, but they will not sacrifice convenience or cost to do it. We succeed because we make the sustainable choice also the cheapest and easiest choice. Remove the friction and adoption follows.
Data Drives Credibility
Vague environmental claims mean nothing. When we started publishing specific metrics — trees saved, water conserved, tons diverted — based on EPA lifecycle data, our credibility with sustainability-focused businesses increased dramatically.
Every Box Tells a Story
A double-wall gaylord that carried auto parts from Detroit can carry produce from Yakima on its second life. Every box has a history and a future. That perspective keeps our team motivated and our customers connected to the mission.
How We Work
Company Culture
Culture at Seattle Boxes is not about perks or slogans. It is about the shared understanding that our work has a direct, measurable impact on the environment. Every box we inspect, every truck we load, every customer we serve is connected to a larger purpose.
We operate with a flat structure where ideas flow freely between the warehouse floor and the front office. The inspector who notices a new box type trending in the supply stream can flag it directly and influence purchasing decisions. The driver who identifies a more efficient route can implement it immediately.
Continuous improvement is a daily practice, not a quarterly initiative. Weekly team huddles review metrics, discuss challenges, and celebrate wins. Monthly reviews examine environmental impact data, customer satisfaction scores, and operational efficiency. Every team member can see how their work contributes to the mission.
We also believe in having fun. Warehouse work is physical and demanding, and we foster an environment where hard work is balanced with camaraderie, recognition, and genuine appreciation for the effort our people put in every day.
Flat Hierarchy
Ideas and feedback flow freely. Every team member has direct input into how we operate and improve.
Mission-Connected Roles
Every position — from inspection to delivery to customer service — is directly tied to our environmental mission.
Continuous Learning
Cross-training, skill development, and exposure to every part of the operation keep our team versatile and engaged.
Data-Driven Decisions
Weekly huddles and monthly reviews ensure every decision is informed by real performance and impact data.
Beyond Business
Community Impact
Our impact extends beyond the businesses we serve. We regularly donate boxes to local food banks, homeless shelters, and nonprofit organizations that need packaging materials but cannot afford to buy new. During natural disasters and community emergencies, our trucks and inventory are deployed to support relief efforts.
We also partner with local schools and community colleges to provide educational programs on sustainability, circular economy principles, and careers in logistics and environmental services. Our facility hosts tours for student groups, giving the next generation firsthand exposure to how a sustainable business operates from the inside.
The Pacific Northwest has a deep culture of environmental stewardship. We are proud to be part of that tradition, and we take seriously our responsibility to operate in a way that strengthens the communities and ecosystems around us. Every box we rescue is a small victory for the region — and collectively, those small victories add up to something transformative.
Looking Ahead
The Future of Seattle Boxes
We have built a strong foundation, but the most exciting chapters are still ahead. Here is where we are going.
1 Million Boxes Annually
Our near-term target is to double processing capacity. This means expanded facility space, additional inspection stations, and regional collection partnerships. Every additional box we process is another box saved from the waste stream.
100% Electric Fleet
We are converting our delivery fleet to electric vehicles, starting with the highest-frequency local routes. Currently at 35%, we are targeting full conversion by 2028. This will eliminate the last significant source of direct emissions in our operations.
Regional Expansion
The Pacific Northwest is our home base, but the box waste problem is nationwide. We are exploring satellite collection and distribution points in key markets to extend our reach while maintaining the quality standards our customers depend on.
Technology Integration
We are investing in inventory management systems, route optimization software, and customer portals that will make ordering and scheduling even more seamless. The goal is to make buying and selling used boxes as easy as ordering anything else online.
Our Values
What Guides Us
These are not corporate platitudes hanging on a wall. These are the principles we use to make decisions every day.
Waste Is a Choice
We believe most packaging waste is unnecessary. A box does not become trash after one trip — that is a decision, and we offer a better one.
Quality Without Compromise
Used does not mean inferior. We inspect and grade every box to ensure it meets performance standards. Our reputation depends on the quality of what we sell.
Transparency First
Clear grading, honest pricing, upfront terms. We never oversell or misrepresent the condition of our inventory. What you see is what you get.
Business Should Do Good
Profitability and sustainability are not at odds. We prove every day that doing right by the planet is also the smart financial move for businesses.
Our Team
People Who Care
Our team is a mix of logistics veterans, sustainability advocates, and hands-on warehouse professionals. What unites everyone at Seattle Boxes is a genuine belief that what we do matters. You will not find anyone here going through the motions.
From the inspectors who check every box for structural integrity to the drivers who plan efficient pickup routes to reduce fuel consumption, every role at Seattle Boxes is connected to the mission. We hire people who see a stack of used boxes and see potential, not waste.
We also believe in growing with our team. Cross-training is standard, and team members regularly rotate between departments to understand the full lifecycle of how we operate. It makes us better — and it keeps work interesting.
